2 Feb 2006 - Award For Top Apprentice
Goodmarriott and Hursthouse.
With kind permission from Graham Percy for Goodmarriott & Hursthouse.
Award for Top Apprentice
Matthew Vickery, a 20 year old apprentice from Clifton, Nottingham, is the
eleventh winner of the Jamie Loyley Award presented annually at electrical
and mechanical engineers, Goodmarriott and Hursthouse, in memory of the
apprentice electrician who died in a tragic holiday accident in July 1994.
Matthew, who is the third winner in six years to have attended Farnborough
Comprehensive School, Clifton, won the award as the year's best young
apprentice in training, like Jamie, at Goodmarriott and Hursthouse. Funded
by a collection made among Jamie's workmates and an ongoing donation from
his employer, the annual award consists of a trophy along with a cheque
for the purchase of electrician's tools.
Matthew who has been at Goodmarriott and Hursthouse for over three and a
half years has been involved in projects at Center Parcs in Norfolk and
Wealstun Prison, near Whetherby. He continues to study stage 4 of his
apprenticeship. Throughout, he has been guided by Steve Wheldon who, in
his 38 years with the firm, has acted as mentor for many current employees
including Darron Littlehales, the board member who made the presentation.
Steve says, "Matthew is an excellent lad, really good at everything he
tries."
Goodmarriott and Hursthouse's human resources manager, Jacqui Cook says,
"Mathew is a credit to an apprenticeship, a good all round worker who
never moans about where he's sent, or who he's sent with. He met all his
training deadlines and submitted his work on time with little need for
correction. I see him as a supervisor in the making."
Matthew plays lawn bowls for England and trains four nights a week. Last
year, he was part of the UK Home Series winning team, now in preparation
to defend the title in 2006. His interest in the sport came through
friends and his grandparents.
Previous winners of the Jamie Loyley Award are Thomas Ryder from
Bakersfield, Lee Brabbin from Hucknall, Shaun Crossley of Arnold, Adam
Fukes of Carlton, Simon North from Clifton, Steven Williams from St Ann's,
Edward Topping of Sherwood, Trevor Litchfield from Clifton, Shaun Guthrie
from Wilford and last year's winner, James Jones from Clifton, Nottingham.
