4 May 2007 - A GRAND PARADE THANKS TO PUPILS

Congratulations to our Year 9 Pupils who helped to transform Varney Road shopping area.
From the Nottingham Evening Post 04 05 2007

A Parade of shops in Clifton has been given a new lease of life with the help of school pupils.

Varney Road has been transformed in a nine-month project and now has a stunning mural of local scenes and new street furniture, paving and trees.

Youngsters from Farnborough School and Technology College teamed up with Groundwork Greater Nottingham.

Angela Ganss, of Groundwork, said: "They worked with local artists and me to draw up a list of what they thought the main problems in the area were.

"They then put together a wish-list of what they would like to see done to improve them."

Mark Collins, head of humanities at Farnborough, said: "It's been a great project for us to get involved in.

"Farnborough is a technology college and one of the things we strive to do is have links with the community.

"The students have learnt so much while doing it."

Samantha Graham, 13, was one of the pupils involved in the project. She said: "I really enjoyed helping with the art work. It was nice to learn a new skill and help the community at the same time."

Alan Simpson MP officially opened the new-look area during an afternoon of celebrations last Friday.

He said: "The lovely part for me is that this has tapped into the creative abilities of the youngsters themselves.

"There is a real sense of community ownership about it and I think the fact that the students have had a role in creating it means it will be respected."

A variety of activities were organised throughout the afternoon by staff at the Co-op store, including a bouncy castle for children and a buffet lunch.

Store manager Sue Shaw said: "You hear so many bad things about youth today and it is really nice to have something positive like this happening."
